Make decisions

The Talent Code

Oh nice, The Talent Code, by Daniel Coyle is available online, http://thetalentcode.com/excerpt/

Comments:

Really well written!

Daniel builds up a lot of images to the reader.
This is done by describing the looks of things even if the looks are not important for the message of the story itself. He also uses common images like The Darwin Beagle to force the reader to build an internal image.

He connects the beginning to the end

Strange that he mentions visiting nine places but only tells us about a few of them, maybe leaving stuff out for the next couple of chapters?

He uses humor. Like the 8year old beating him at tennis.

to be continued...

I am a Writer

Assignment

"I would like you to write a brief essay (~300 words) in which you introduce yourself as a writer to your classmates and me. How would you describe yourself as a writer? What are some of your most memorable experiences with writing? Please draw on your experiences with writing and refer directly to some of these as you introduce yourself as a writer. "
-Denise Comer, Course Material

 Result

I´m a writer, even if I might be quite unskilled and have had a hard time completing any longer written assignments.

As a kid I started out by writing "polis" the Swedish word for police on the wallpaper at home. During school I was not the worst student but I never felt it necessary to work on my handwriting.

During the long school-years I wrote a few essays I still remember fondly, Those stories were all emotional stories on subjects like love, death, or euthanasia and I spent a very focused time on a very few words, a page or a little more than a page.

Apart from writing assignments, I have tried a few times to write longer stories but always stopped after a few pages with writers block. Even if I had an idea that felt worth telling, the story would not go past those few pages.

In my job as a teacher I do quite a bit of writing, lectures, assignments, feedback, emails and I feel that I have improved the last few years, but still have a lot to learn. I still have a hard time writing clear instructions that are easy to interpret for my students.

The reason for me taking this course is that: As a PhD student I must improve my writing. I published my first paper with lots of help from my supervisor that corrected, rewritten and helped me see the problems in my argumentation. In order to improve my English writing skills I have recently started a blog on one of my hobbies, robots, electronics and open source hardware.

I look forward to reading what you guys write and improve my own.

Starting the blog

Today I decided to take up a course in writing. I think I have a lot of issues with my writing and as a PhD student its important to be able to write convincingly.

This blog is going to be the record of all my writing attempts in the course. I hopefully can post all the written examinations here without anyone using them for the same course.

First assignment is to write a short 300 words description of me as a writer.
